Malalai joya Meets with Journalists in Kabul

On July 12, 2006 Ms. Joya met with some local and foreign journalists in Kabul. Nasir Fayaz, Qadir Mirzai, Abdul Ghani Mudaqeq, and Wahid Paykan from Ariana TV, Makya from Pajhwak News Agency, Parwin from national TV, Nurullah Rahmani and Haidari from Tolo TV, Alina Rasy and Safiya from Radio Liberty, poet H.Niyazi, Engineer Wase the editor of weekly Rozgaran, Dr. Mateen the spokesman of Solidarity Party, Alisa Johansen Robin from Los Angeles Times, two journalists from National Geography and a young singer Mr. Ahmad Zia were among the journalists who were invited for a meeting with Joya.

During this friendly meeting, Joya explained her positions and policies and answered to the questions. She said journalists have an important role in a society and freedom of press is a main element of democracy. She said that self-censorship and fundamentalism are the biggest threats to Afghan press and it is the responsibility of the real journalists to resist and stand up against these barriers.
